How To Read a Brain Supplement Label in 60 Seconds

Turn the bottle around. The front of a brain supplement is written by a marketing team. The back is written by a regulator. Here is how to read the back in sixty seconds, and the four places brands hide things.

1. Find the serving size first

Everything on the panel is per serving, and the serving is whatever the brand decided. Two gummies. One capsule. A scoop. A “250 mg” that is per two gummies is 125 mg per gummy, and if you take one a day, you are getting half of what the front of the bottle implied.

2. Look for the %DV column

Daily Value is the amount a regulator says an adult needs in a day. Under 15% is a trace, and brands are not supposed to make a claim on it. Over 100% means the formula was built around that nutrient. A brain formula that lists vitamin B6 at 706% and zinc at 91% is telling you where its money went.

3. The words “proprietary blend”

This is the one to watch. A proprietary blend lists ingredients in descending order by weight, with one total for the whole group and no amount for any single ingredient. It is legal and it is common. It also means you cannot tell whether the bacopa in the blend is a real dose or a pinch for the label. A product that is only a proprietary blend, with nothing dosed on its own, is asking you to trust the front of the bottle.

The fair test is not “no blends ever.” It is: does the panel put real, dosed vitamins and minerals on the table first, and use the blend for the botanicals? Or is the blend the whole product?

4. The forms of the minerals

Zinc oxide, magnesium oxide and ferrous fumarate are the cheap forms. Citrate, glycinate and bisglycinate cost more and are gentler. Neither is a scandal. But if a brand charges a premium and uses every cheap form, the premium is going somewhere other than the capsule.

5. Three lines people skip

We built Sharp Queen to pass this test in public: 22 vitamins and minerals with every amount printed, one named 18-ingredient brain blend, the allergen line and the iron warning right on the page, not in a footnote. Read our full Supplement Facts →

Sixty seconds, four places. Once you have read one label this way, you cannot un-read the rest of the shelf.
